Genetic Proof of Origin

Genetic proof of origin is based on an animal's unchanging DNA. It is tamper-proof, and a single cell-containing sample from the animal in question is sufficient for verification; no additional documents (labels, chip information, identity papers) are required.

A prerequisite is the availability of reference data that has been deposited in advance, either for the animal itself or for its parents (see also 'generation effect').

Advantages

Genetic proof of origin is established as soon as an animal's genetic identity has been established. In programmes that use fixed routines to record all animals of a population for this purpose, this creates, with little effort, a reliable safeguard system that unambiguously covers all offspring.
